Will my insurance company pay for podiatry treatment?
Routine podiatry
Most health insurance company policies cover podiatry treatment and will reimburse either part of or the full amount of the fee paid to the podiatrist. A podiatrist who has been qualified for more than 5 years can be registered with most health insurance companies. Alternatively, some insurance companies will accept treatment carried out by a podiatrist as long they have the appropriate qualifications. It is advisable to check with your health insurance company beforehand to clarify their position on podiatry cover.
Biomechanics, orthotics and podiatric surgery
For biomechanical assessments, orthotics and podiatric surgery, it is vital to check with your insurance company that your podiatrist or podiatric surgeon is registered with them and if their treatment is covered by your policy. Most companies insist on at least a GP referral, and many require a consultant referral. Insurance companies often pay for biomechanical assessments but will not pay for orthotic devices.
