There is no difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist. The term chiropodist has been traditionally used in the UK, whereas podiatrist is recognised and used more internationally. Increasingly, UK chiropodists are being referred to as podiatrists and many people in the profession refer to themselves as both.

Both Chiropodist and Podiatrist are protected titles and can only be used by individuals registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC). The HPC regulates the chiropody and podiatry profession and ensures its members meet their standards for training, professional skills, behaviour and health.

Foot Problems?

A podiatrist is a health professional who can diagnose, treat and manage conditions of the feet. Routine chiropody and podiatry includes treatment for foot problems such as ingrown (ingrowing) toenails, corns and callus, verruca's (verrucae), cracked heels and fungal infections of the nails and skin (Athlete's Foot).

Many podiatrists specialise in the structure and functioning of the feet, known as biomechanics. They often prescribe corrective insoles known as orthotics which, for example can support fallen arches and flat feet.

Podiatrists also manage patients with high-risk conditions such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. These patients are more at risk of developing foot problems.

Some podiatrists undergo extensive training to become Podiatric surgeons. Podiatric surgeons, or foot surgeons, operate on all areas of the feet. Foot surgery often includes the correction of bunions and hammer toes.
